A successful organization in the transportation industry is seeking a Controller to join its finance team and take on an increasingly strategic role within the accounting function. This is a long-term opportunity for a CPA who brings strong technical accounting experience and is interested in growing into broader financial leadership.

About the Role
Reporting to senior finance leadership, the Controller will oversee core accounting and financial reporting activities while partnering with the broader business on financial analysis, compliance, and process improvement. The successful candidate will work closely with an experienced accounting team to gain a strong understanding of the organization’s operations and progressively assume greater ownership of the finance function. This role is well suited to someone who wants to move beyond transactional accounting and build toward a broader leadership position.

What You’ll Do

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Oversee accurate and timely accounting records and financial information.
  • Manage and review general ledger activity, journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and adjustments.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements and management reporting.
  • Ensure accounting records are maintained in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Investigate discrepancies and ensure issues are appropriately resolved.
  • Support cash flow management and financial analysis.

Tax & Compliance

  • Support corporate tax compliance and related reporting requirements.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of Canadian accounting and tax requirements.
  • Provide support for international accounting and tax matters.
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors, auditors, and other professional partners.
  • Help ensure financial practices remain compliant with applicable requirements.

Audit & Controls

  • Coordinate external audit activities and prepare supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Respond to auditor questions and assist with resolving accounting matters.
  • Maintain effective documentation and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen controls, reporting, and financial processes.

Business Partnership & Process Improvement

  • Partner with finance and operational leaders to understand business needs and provide financial insight.
  • Review existing accounting processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting.
  • Help develop and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Support improvements to systems, processes, and financial reporting.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the accounting function.

Leadership & Growth

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s accounting operations and business model.
  • Build strong relationships across departments and serve as a trusted finance resource.
  • Take increasing ownership of key accounting and financial responsibilities.
  • Support the continued development of the finance team and function.

What You Bring

  • CPA designation is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Several years of progressive accounting experience with increasing responsibility.
  • Strong general ledger and financial reporting experience.
  • Experience with audits and external auditors.
  • Solid knowledge of Canadian accounting and tax requirements.
  • Exposure to international accounting or tax matters is an asset.
  • Manufacturing experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • Experience working with ERP or accounting systems.
  • Advanced Excel skills are an asset.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently while partnering effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
